How to Determine Landscaping Costs for Your Project
Landscaping Cost: How to Determine a Good Budget for Your Project
There is a huge range in landscaping cost and many factors affect the final budget.; there are many components, such as access to the site, level of detail, possible permits or regulations, selecting materials, and how difficult they are to install. For example, a five-hundred-square-foot patio using the same material and the same square footage may cost anywhere from twelve thousand to fifty thousand. I am sure many of you are asking how that is possible. The least expensive option is a square patio with no cuts, with extremely easy access, set on an existing properly installed gravel base. The most expensive option would include the removal of an existing patio, soil, and poorly existing gravel with poor access. The next step would be to import all the necessary materials to the poorly accessed patio. After the materials were at the location, the new patio would have detailed curves and patterns, which would mean cutting the pavers with a high level of detail. Then the sight clean-up would be greater because of all the dust and debris left from the cutting. At this stage, the paver patio installation cost can increase significantly due to the added labor and time required. Finally, we may install a sand lock product and sealer on this more detailed patio. We haven’t even talked about more expensive materials such as tile or stone. Just with a patio, the cost of a 500 square foot patio, depending on design and outside influences, can range from ten to over one hundred dollars a square foot. It’s also worth considering how landscaping and home value connect, especially when making material and design decisions at different budget levels.
Landscape Design in Bellevue: Real Project Scenarios
I have completed landscape projects as far back as 1997, and from budgets as small as a couple of thousand dollars to as great as over half a million dollars. If I were to start thinking about a new project for my home, the first thing I would do is make a list of landscape problems, such as a lack of paved space, drainage problems, the desire for a flat usable space, or dead or overgrown plants. Then I make a list of more elaborate items such as water features, outdoor barbeques, or pavilions. I would also take into consideration the value of my home to determine what materials or processes would fit into the value of my home.
Landscaping and Home Value in Bellevue
Finally, how long I would live at my current home, and how and who would use the space. For example, do I have children, and how active are they? Do I have an active dog, or do I have elderly parents that visit regularly, or do I have large gatherings and parties regularly?
If I were to phase my project, the first item I would consider would be what items require repair or urgent attention, such as a broken concrete back patio or driveway, a failed lawn, or overgrown trees that need removal or pruning. Secondly, what items don’t function or fit within the value of my home? An example would be my home, where all the homes are between one and three million dollars. The minimum expectation would be a functional back deck or patio, a concrete or paver driveway and front walkway, and a functional aesthetic front and back yard planting. My home, the minimum, would use matching materials that might be less expensive since my home is at the lower end of this community, such as cedar decking, concrete driveway, and paver front walkway, along with a simple, low-care planting. Where the high-end home is in the neighborhood, the expectation might include a high-end tropical hardwood deck, an additional stone patio, back artificial turf, a simple water feature, an outdoor pavilion, and detailed back planting, where the front would have a paver driveway, a stone front walkway, and detailed front planting, along with high-end landscape lighting. For projects like these, it’s also helpful to understand average landscaping cost per square foot, especially when comparing material types and design scope. If you’re including a new patio in your design, it’s important to factor in paver patio cost early in the planning process. A simple equation including all outdoor elements would be about ten percent of the value of your home if you are living in a major metro area. This percentage-based approach helps estimate your total landscaping cost more effectively.
Choosing the Right Design and Build Team
I would consider if you can ask friends or family what they spent on a similar project.
The next step would be to interview multiple contractors, with the best course of action being to find a direct referral from someone you know who has completed a similar project. As a consumer, I would be more focused on the contractor’s process versus price. The reason is that there may be hidden costs, such as portions of the project that are not included, surcharges for change orders, permits, or homeowner association fees, or additional design fees. For a detailed project, you will need the help of a designer or landscape architect. It can get extremely complex to hire an outside designer versus using a design and build firm. With an outside designer, you may have additional unknown fees both from the contractor and designer if they do not communicate well with each other. Doing so helps control landscaping costs and ensures all aspects of the design are feasible and well-coordinated.
